The international musicological symposium The Musical Baroque, Western Slavs and the European Cultural Communion, held in Zagreb in 1989, and, consequently, these proceedings, had one point of departure as their central and main thesis: within the Slavic world and (politically former) eastern Europe there exists an essential differentiation (till approximately the mid-19th century) of two spheres in the field of musical culture; firstly, the sphere of Catholic-Protestant Slavs from the Central Europe (Poles, Czechs/Moravians, Slovaks, Slovenians, Croats), and, secondly, the sphere of Orthodox Slavs. All papers published in this volume are concerned with some aspects or the whole of the first musico-cultural sphere, for this purpose called the sphere of “Western Slavs”, with special emphasis on the Baroque period.
The purpose of establishing the above mentioned thesis, and the endeavours of its verification, was to point to some inadequate approaches, methods, and, consequently, cognitive deficiencies concerning the so-called Slavic world and so-called Eastern Europe, above all in western musicology; further, the aim was to provide evidence that the western part of the “Slavic world” has been – as far as art music, its appearances, substance and forms of its products, and organizational frames and reception is concerned – an integral part of West-European musical culture.
